Pensions with endogenous and stochastic fertility1

چکیده
This paper studies the design of a pay-as-you-go social security system in a society where fertility is in part stochastic and in part determined through capital investment. If parents’ investments in children are publicly observable, pension benefits must be linked positively to the the level of investment, and payroll taxes negatively to the number of children. The outcome is characterized by full insurance with all parents, regardless of their number of children, enjoying identical consumption levels. Without observability, benefits must increase, and payroll taxes decrease, with the number of children. The second-best level of investment in children, and the resulting average fertility rate, are less than their corresponding first-best levels. JEL classification: H55; J13.

Pensions with heterogenous individuals and endogenous fertility1
This paper studies the design of pension schemes in a society where fertility is endogenous and parents differ in their ability to raise children. In a world with perfect information, a pay-as-you-go social security system is characterized by equal pensions for all but different contributions which may or may not increase with the number of children. Additionally, fertility must be subsidized a...

متن کاملPrivate Pensions, Retirement Wealth and Lifetime Earnings
This paper investigates the effect of private pensions on the retirement wealth distribution. We incorporate stochastic private pension coverage into a calibrated life-cycle model with stochastic earnings. Private pensions lead to higher net worth inequality at retirement, which is closer to the inequality observed in the PSID than a model without private pensions. However, the offset effect of...
متن کاملFunding unfunded pensions
For many larger multinational companies, unfunded pensions represent an unmanaged risk and a growing liability. With the removal of the ‘corridor’ in the new IFRS IAS19R accounting regulations, unfunded pensions have become an increased source of volatility on the corporate balance sheet. Despite this, until today, funding unfunded pensions locally has either been too expensive or not possible....
متن کاملMortality risk and real optimal asset allocation for pension funds∗
We analyze the problem of real optimal asset allocation for a pension fund maximising the expected CRRA utility of its real disposable wealth. The financial horizon of the analysis coincides with the random death time of a representative subscriber. We consider a very general setting where there exists a stochastic investment opportunity set together with stochastic contributions and pensions a...
